Incentive - Chicago 2010

Running regularly is definately easier than writing!

When I first started this blog, my intention was to record my
daily distances run, times and weight losses in the virtual world
rather than in a notebook. At the same time I thought I'd share
what goes on in my mind while pounding the streets.

Quite a lot has happened since I last posted and I can see quite a
lot will change again before I get to Chicago on October 8th 2010.

Thursday 4th Feb 3.7 miles in 31.30 (one stop)
Saturday 6th Feb 3.7 miles in 29.48 (one stop) - Weight 13 stone 13 lbs

Spring is on its way!

Guilt's a very powerful motivator. But, not enough of one to coax me out on the roads at the moment. Not only have I not updated this blog for ages, but I have also only run three times since Christmas and they were in a gym in Luton (a stress reliever during a week long training course at Head Office)
Monday 19th Jan 4 miles in 31.53
Tuesday 20th Jan 4 miles in 30.30
Thursday 22nd Jan 4 miles in 32.25

So why do I feel guilty? Firstly my weight has gone back up to 83.5kg, which is nearly what it was before my training for New York started. That means that when I do start running regularly again, my back is likely to get stiff and just carrying that extra weight is going to require more effort.
Secondly, I failed to achieve my first goal of the year which was to keep running through the winter and to run in the Helsby half marathon on 18th January. This was despite entering and receiving my running number and timing chip. As my son said to me 'didn't that cost you money?' He's right! There's a cost to marathon running and that is financial but more importantly time.
So, what will get me running regularly again? Warmer weather, now March is nearly here, but more importantly longer days. I'm not a fan of getting up with the sun, leaping out of bed and running six miles before breakfast. Physiologically that just makes no sense to me, after all, this is the commonest time of the day for heart attacks to occur. Running round the streets in the dark and cold doesn't appeal either. It's not so much the worry of not being seen by motorists, but more the fear of stumbling and twisting an ankle on a poorly lit piece of road.
Guilt hasn't worked, but I'm sure sunshine will. Perhaps I suffer from a weird form of SAD! I've also been inspired this week, by my boss returning from a successful climb of Mt. Kilimanjaro and another colleague running eight miles.

I've been and gone and done it!!

Done what? I hear you cry (...those of you, that is, who have stumbled upon this blog!)
Entered another full marathon. Yes I know I must be mad, but on Sunday 20th
September 2009 I will once again be running (more like pounding if New York's anything to go by) 42 kilometres or 26.2 miles around the streets of Berlin.

Ok, so I've said 'again'. It's surely no big deal to someone who has run many halves
over the years and three full marathons previously. But, that's where you are wrong! I remember my mum's words about pregnancies two and three. The pregnancy goes fine until the point at which labour begins and then you think to yourself why am I doing this all over again. You'd have thought I'd learnt. (I think she may have used slightly stronger language than this!) But somehow the body cons you and seems to forget all the pain and effort when you finally see the prize (well I hope she felt that when she saw me!)

So why am I putting myself through weeks of lonely training, possible injury, expense, time away from family, expectation from colleagues and friends? (Oh, I guess that now includes you lot too!) Hopefully this blog will be my chance to explain. I'm sure there have been many others written on the subject, but this is about what goes on in my head, why I do it and is a glimpse to all those non-runners out there, who constantly ask me what I think about for hour after hour (hence the title...thanks J.) Why is it I don't get bored?
